In 2011, Valerie Brandes founds Jacaranda Books publishing house with the aim of bringing underrepresented authors to the market, and in 2012, the SI Leeds Literary Prize is launched to find talent by unpublished women writers of colour.
In 2015, the Writing the Future report, commissioned by Spread the Word, finds glaring disparities in the treatment of black and Asian authors compared to white authors in the UK publishing and festival sector.
In 2016, Sunny Singh, Nikesh Shukla and Media Diversified launch the inaugural Jhalak Prize: an annual literary prize awarded to a British writer of colour. Authors on the shortlist include Kiran Milwood Hargrave, Abir Mukherjee, Irenosen Okojie, David Olusoga, Jacob Ross, and Gary Younge.
