Idris Elba is an acclaimed and prominent actor, DJ and rapper. Elba started acting in 1994 and had his breakout role in the HBO series, The Wire. His television career continued to thrive, and he starred in the lead role in the critically acclaimed BBC drama Luther, which ran from 2010 to 2019. Elba is also a musician, producer, and radio presenter, and has spoken in parliament about the lack of diversity on screen. He was also on the board of governors of the British Film Institute (BFI) from 2018 to 2022, and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Arts in recognition of his work on diversity in media.
