Gail Parmel, the co-founder and artistic director of ACE (African Cultural Exchange) Dance and Music, began her lifelong career in performing arts when had won a place at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds. Following her time with the Kokuma Dance Company, she dedicated her time to build ACE and creating choreographies and collaborations which fuse contemporary movement with African Caribbean dance forms, chief amongst them have been Skin and Mana: The Power Within. The company is a leading arts organisation in Birmingham and internationally recognised in the field of contemporary African and Caribbean dance. Once identified as one of top 50 influential women in arts and culture sector by Cultural Leadership Programme (CLP), she has been awarded honorary fellowships by the.Northern School of Contemporary Dance and the University of Wolverhampton in recognition of her inspirational work in dance, art and education.
