Sonia Sabri is a Kathak exponent and the artistic director of Sonia Sabri Company which celebrated 20th anniversary in 2022. Creating choreographies that embrace contemporary approaches and evoke the classical roots of Kathak, her productions reflect an appreciation of western and eastern cultures. Sabri has worked as choreographer and movement director with Trevor Nunn, Arlene Phillips, Marion, Jonzi D, Richard Alston, Shobana Jeyasingh, Nitin Sawhney and Rose English and she has received commissions from the BBC, Channel 4, Tanzhaus, ARTE, Birmingham Hippodrome, South Bank Centre, and the London Olympics (2012) amongst others. Some of her awards and nominations include, the Bench Fellowship (2016), The National Indian Arts Award for Distinguished Teacher of Dance (2017), The National Diversity Awards (2018) and ACTA awards for Dance (2016, 2019). Sonia Sabri Company has toured nationally and internationally with a repertoire of works for WOMAD, Latitude, Shrewsbury Folk and other community arts festivals, and has been commissioned to create bespoke work for television, theatre, site-specific and film. The company is an associate organisation at Birmingham Hippodrome and won The Prestige Awards for the best dance company (2019). Sabri is a member of the Board of DanceXchange Birmingham and is one of CURVE Leicester’ Resident Creatives.
