British historian and writer whose work has transformed understandings of African and Caribbean contributions to British history. The first African-British historian appointed as a professor of history in the UK, Adi has authored several influential books, including West Africans in Britain 1900–1960: Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and Communism (1998) and Pan-Africanism and Communism (2013). His sustained body of nonfiction work has not only recovered overlooked histories but also shaped public and academic discourse on race, empire, and resistance in Britain.
