Lawyer, activist, and writer whose essays and political commentary have contributed to feminist, anti-racist, and secular discourse in Britain since the 1980s. A founding member of Southall Black Sisters, Patel has published on the intersections of gender, race, religion, and state violence. She has authored essays, policy papers, and chapters in key feminist and anti-racist collections from the 1980s onwards, e.g. Black British Feminism, and Women and Citizenship in Europe (1992). While much of her writing has been collective and activist in origin, Patel has consistently advocated for the rights of minoritised women in Britain.
