Lucy Mathen is a notable former journalist and is now a practicing ophthalmologist. Mathen became the BBC’s first South Asian female news reporter when she started presenting Newsround in 1976; this was a significant moment for South Asian visibility on screen as she was covering the major stories of the day previously only covered by white men. After working on a women’s current affairs documentary in Afghanistan, she decided to retrain as a doctor. She also founded a charity called ‘Second Sight’, which works to help remove blindness and cataract blindness in India.
