Lucy Mathen is a notable former journalist and is now a practicing ophthalmologist. Mathen became the BBC’s first South Asian female news presenter when she started presenting Newsround in 1976; this was a significant moment for South Asian visibility on screen. After working on a women’s current affairs documentary in Afghanistan, she decided to retrain as a doctor. She also founded a charity called ‘Second Sight’, which works to help remove cataract blindness in India.
