Norman Beaton was a pioneering actor, best known for his role as Desmond Ambrose in Desmond’s. Desmond's is a British sitcom created by Trix Worrell; the show has a predominantly Black British cast and was one of Channel 4’s longest-running sitcoms. Beaton first appeared on the British television show The Fosters and has also featured on Empire Road and Playing Away; his acting career began in the 1970s. Before coming to the UK from Guyana, Beaton was a Calypso singer and performed in the Calypso band, The Four Bees. Before his acting career, he was briefly a teacher in Liverpool and became the first Black teacher in the Liverpool Education Authority. Beaton died at the age of 60 in 1994.
